The Detroit Speed Bolt-In Heater Delete Plate is an easy way to smooth your factory firewall when installing an aftermarket air conditioning system such as a Vintage Air unit. It also can give your A-body that rare original heater delete look. This panel is for originally equipped heater only cars.
1. Drain the cooling system and remove the heater hoses from the heater core.
Note: If a heating/cooling system will not be placed in the car, the heater
hoses must be removed from the engine and their ports plugged.
2. You will be required to remove the original heater system from the vehicle.
a. Remove the heater box cover from the engine compartment.
i. Loosen the passenger side inner fender to gain access to the
screws holding the box in place.
ii. Remove the nuts that hold the heater box and cover to the
firewall. There will be a total of six nuts.
iii. Remove the heater box cover.
b. Remove the heater box from the inside of the car. Note: Be sure to
disconnect any electrical connections from items such as the blower
motor and the resistor. Be careful when removing the heater box from
inside the car as there may still be coolant in the heater core.
3. Install the Detroit Speed Heater Delete Plate
a. Clean the areas on the firewall where there may be left over sealant on
the firewall. This will be necessary for the heater plate to provide an
adequate seal. NOTE: Check to make sure the pre-drilled holes on the
heater delete plate line up with the mounting holes in the firewall. Hole
modifications to the firewall may be necessary.
b. It is important to paint the entire heater delete plate to guard against
rust.
c. Apply sealant to the back of the plate. We recommend using 3M StripCaulk p/n: 08578.
d. Now install the panel on the firewall and replace the factory hardware
with new hardware. You will use six 1/4”-20 x 1”L bolts and two #12
sheet metal screws. Use any style bolt from button head, allen head or
hex head bolts.
