The styling of the 1968 Chevrolet Camaro was similar to the previous year, with the introduction of Astro Ventilation, side vent windows were removed. Front and rear body side marker lights were added as part of safety requirements for all 68 vehicles. The 68 Chevy Camaro also had a more pointed center radiator grille. The front running lights on non-RS models were changed from circular to oval. The rear shock absorber mounting system was staggered to resolve wheel hop issues and higher performance models received multi-leaf rear springs instead of single-leaf units.
The major change to the 68 Rally Sport Camaro package was the in the "hide-away" headlights, they were no longer electric operated and now functioned off engine Vacuum. Approximately 40,977 Camaros were equipped with the RS option package.
Later production 1968 Camaro Super Sport "SS" models received newly redesigned chrome hood scoop inserts that imitated velocity stacks. Big Block engine equipped models still received the Low-Gloss Black painted rear tail light panel. A new 396 cubic inch engine producing 350 horse power and 415 foot pounds of torque was added as an option for the SS. Approximately 27,884 SS models were produced in 68.
The Z28 now appeared as an option in 1968 GM dealership brochures. Early production models received 302 fender emblems, then in about March GM switched to actual RPO code Z/28 emblems on the fenders. A Total of 235,147 Camaros were assembled for the 1968 model year and of that number only 7,199 were Z/28 equipped.
