1979 - 1981 Camaro Auto Shifter Conversion Kit for Overdrive Transmissions

New conversion kit for upgrading your turbo 350 or turbo 400 shifter to adapt to a newer OD transmission. Use your 79, 80, or 81 Camaro factory-installed automatic floor shifter with a newer 4-speed overdrive TH700-R4, TH200-4R, 4L60E, 4L70E or 4L80E transmission.

Overview

This product will convert your factory automatic floor shifter that came in your car to now work with a more modern transmission. Available for 4-speed OD automatics, this kit takes the guesswork out of a transmission upgrade and makes your shifter work as if your car came that way from the factory.

Is This Your Shifter?

This is the shifter this kit is made to work with.

NOTE: Not for use of on the Rally Ratchet Style Slap Shifter. Shifter should only move backwards and forwards, NOT side to side.

This kit does include a new shifter detent (EXCEPT for 6L80E / 6L90E kits). The Powerglide (2-speed) shifter was able to be used without modification for the TH350 or TH400 (3-speeds). However, when switching to a 4-speed overdrive automatic this is no longer true. The conversion was not designed for, and does not include any provision for, use of the "Rally" shifting option. Continued use of this option should be tested with the engine off. There will be NO STOP for the Overdrive. View the diagram below to learn why.

This kit does not allow for steering lock or neutral safety column linkages. To solve this easily relocate your neutral safety / back-up light switch to your shifter with our Neutral Safety / Back-up Light Switch Relocation Kit Part # DAS-276.

To add even more fine-tuning adjustability, add in our adjustable shift cable Part # TRA-128.

This kit uses your original linkage. The conversion includes a new laser cut and hardened detent for proper stops and gear selection, a new matching transmission shift lever, all necessary hardware, and instructions.
